Tisch Library is connected to the Tufts campus network and may be used to access the
Internet with laptop computers in areas where network ports have been activated. This
document is designed to aid those who wish to use the Internet from their computer while in
the Library. Tisch has laptop lending, see circulation desk for more information. Topics addressed in this document include: 1. Who may connect to the campus network/Internet in the Library?
2. What equipment do I need to access the network in Tisch Library?
3. Where may I connect to the network in Tisch Library?
4. How do I connect to the network once I have all the equipment and have registered?
5. Once connected, what options are available to me?
6. When is this service available?
7. Frequently asked questions
8. Who can I call if I have a question or need help? 1. Who may connect to the campus network/Internet in the Library?
Only students, faculty and staff who are authorized to use the Tufts campus network may
register to use the network in the library. The general community, including students from
other universities, does not have access to the Tufts network. Consult the list below to find
out how to register. You must register before you can use the network. Students on Campus
If you live in a Tufts dorm where the campus network is available, and have registered to
use the campus network in your dorm room through the Tufts Online registration page,
you should be able to use the network in Tisch immediately. Students off Campus
If you are a current student who lives off campus or are not registered to use the network
in the dorms, even if you live on campus, (undergraduate or graduate students) go to
Eaton Lab (http://ase.tufts.edu/its/labEaton.htm 617-627-3701) to register. Bring the
ethernet address from your computers ethernet card with you, or if you do not know how
to find your ethernet address, bring your computer with you. You will also need your
Tufts ID. Faculty or Staff
See your designated FSP . If you have a laptop that is setup to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) at Tufts, then you may connect in the library immediately. Academic Visitor
If you are sponsored by a Tufts department, please see the FSP of your hosting
department for assistance. ******NEVER leave your laptop computer unattended, even for a minute!******

A computer (Windows or Macintosh). See below for minimum system requirements. An ethernet card or wireless network card, working and installed. Web browsing and other Internet software. Faculty or staff: please consult the guidelines
of your technology support department for recommended and supported software.

3. Where may I connect to the network in Tisch Library?
The star in the map below indicates where active ports are available. Currently, ports
are only available on level 2 (entrance level) of Tisch Library.

How do I connect to the network once I have all the equipment and have registered?
You may need to configure your system (which is done via your TCP/IP software) so that it
complies with the network. Set it to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol). This
allows the network to recognize the address of your ethernet card and automatically assign an
IP address while you are in Tisch Library. The IP address acts as a unique identifier of your
PC while you are on the network. You will also need to physically attach your computer to a
network port in the Library or connect wirelessly. CAUTION: Before making any changes to your computers configuration, note any
existing settings so you can re-enter them to enable your computer to still function at its
original location. System Configuration ( For assistance configuring your computer for DHCP, see a user consultant in the Eaton Lab.)
On Windows computers Access the TCP/IP protocol settings through the Network Control Panel. Choose Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address
automatically if it is not already chosen. You will need to restart your computer for this
change to take effect. Follow the instructions below to physically connect your computer to the network in
Tisch Library.
On Macintosh computers Access the AppleTalk control panel and select Connect via: Ethernet. Then find the
TCP/IP control panel (this may be under the main Apple menu, or it may be under
Network control panel.) From the TCP/IP control panel's Connect via pull down menu, choose Ethernet. From
the Configure pull down menu, choose Using DHCP Server. Close the TCP/IP control
panel and, when prompted, save the changes. If you are running MacOS 8.x or 9.0 on an
iMac, iBook, G3 or G4, go to the next step. Otherwise, you will need to restart to activate
DHCP. If you are running MacOS 8.x on an iMac, iBook, G3 or G4, you need to configure your
computer to release its DHCP lease on shutdown. This requires installation of an
additional control panel, TCP/IP Options, that is available in the Open Transport 2.0.3
Extras folder on the 8.6 CD-ROM or from asu.info.apple.com on the Web. Once the
control panel is installed, make sure the Don't retain DHCP lease on shutdown box is
checked; leave the others blank as shown below. You can now restart to activate DHCP.

Insert one end of your ethernet cable (an RJ45 connector) into one of the ethernet ports
on any active wall jack. Active jacks are marked with yellow labels. All ports are located
on level 2 (entrance level) of Tisch. Some jacks may also include telephone ports. If so,
these are at the top of the jack and are not active. The data port on each jack will be the
Data 1 (left hand) port and it will have a light blue icon. Attach the other end of your ethernet cable (an RJ45 connector) to your computer,
inserting it into the port on your ethernet card. Plug your computers power adapter into an electrical outlet (unless you plan to use a
battery) and turn on your computer. CAUTION: TCP/IP settings may not work off campus or in every building at Tufts. If
you plan to use of your computer away from Tufts you must revert back to your original
settings. Note your original settings before changing to DHCP. These settings should
have no impact on your use of a standard modem off campus. 5. Once connected, what options are available to me?
Once you have successfully set up your hardware and updated your TCP/IP software, a
variety of Tufts computing options are available to you. However, this service does not grant
you special access to computers on which you do not currently have an account. If you do not
have accounts on any of these Tufts computing services, your access will be limited to public
access areas such as the World Wide Web. If you have the necessary accounts and software,
the following resources are available for access from the Tisch Library:
All Tufts hosts to which you have access Any resource on the World Wide Web Telnet to any remote host to which you have access Tufts University NT Local Area Network if you have an account
If you do not have an account on a particular Tufts computing service contact the TCCS Help
Desk at (617) 627-3376 for information on obtaining accounts. You will be referred to the
appropriate office for eligibility requirements and information about each account. 6. When is this service available to me?
Connections to the Internet are available during all hours that the Tisch Library is open.
Library hours are posted at http://www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/hours.htm and on the front door of the library. However, because of network connectivity problems due to Internet or campus
network outages, occasionally the network may be unavailable.

Frequently asked questions Q: I get error messages that are related to DNS or my IP address. Whats wrong? A: Be certain that you have registered to use the system with your FSP or at basement of
Ballou and that your computer is set up to use DHCP.
Q: I think I have the software configured correctly, but I cant get to the network. A: Check your hardware connections. Make sure that you have a compatible ethernet
card installed, and that your ethernet cable is securely plugged in. Check to be sure
you are at an active jack and plugged into the Data 1 port. If you still cannot get on
the network, try another activated port in the area. If all ports in an area seem to be
affected, try another area of the library. Please report general port outages on the form
at http://www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/nomad/problem.htm . You will receive a reply within 48 business hours about your problem and its resolution.
Q: When I use my computer in the Library it works fine but when I take it off campus I
get error messages. A: The information you enter into your TCP/IP software will only run effectively when
you are in the Library or other areas of campus that use DHCP to identify your
computer. If you need other settings when you work at home, another university or at
an off campus employer you will need to re-enter those settings at that other location. 8. Who can I contact if I have a question or need help? For questions about: Contact: ______________________ Network port connectivity
